Hands On With the Asus ZenFone Zoom

LAS VEGAS—Asus is giving its latest smartphone a big upgrade in the imaging section. True to its name, the ZenFone Zoom manages to pack an impressive 3x optical zoom lens in its compact frame (the phone measures only 0.47 inches at its widest indicate). I got a chance to snap some pics with it here at CES.

CES 2022 Bug Art From the front, the ZenFone Zoom looks similar to the ZenFone two and the ZenFone 2 Laser we reviewed last year. Information technology has a pretty standard black plastic design with on-screen buttons. Turn it over, however, and it's a completely dissimilar story.

The back of the ZenFone Zoom looks more like a pocket camera, like the Ricoh GR 2, than a cell phone. It has that familiar glassy-leather texture you discover on many cameras, and yous can tell from the pronounced circular bump that this is no ordinary camera phone. The Zoom uses a 13-megapixel Panasonic SmartFSI sensor, which isn't besides unlike than all the other 13-megapixel shooters on the market, including the ZenFone 2. Where the Zoom differs, however, is in its 10-chemical element lens from Hoya.

This allows the camera to provide up to 3x optical zoom without adding any noticeable bulk, aside from the slight bump around the camera sensor. The camera has an aperture range from f/2.vii to f/4.viii and a 28-84mm focal length. This is topped off with optical epitome stabilization (OIS) to help steady your shots, the power to focus in 0.03 seconds (though this will depend on your level of zoom), and the ability to focus equally close as 2 inches, which could be a benefaction for macro photographers.

On a specially gray solar day hither in Vegas, I used the camera from the 63rd floor of a hotel, and was able to clearly bring signs into focus on the ground below. That said, information technology definitely took longer than 0.03 seconds, and I didn't get a adventure to evaluate the image aside from on the phone's brandish. There are also lots of photographic camera-focused software enhancements, similar Super Resolution way, which captures and combines 4 thirteen-megapixel to effectively create a 52-megapixel paradigm, which could be effective in bumping up detail and toning down racket.

The phone has an anchor loop and a number of strap options, so you can spike it your wrist when out shooting. And for selfies, there's a perfectly serviceable 5-megapixel camera around front.

On the smartphone side of things, the ZenFone Zoom looks to be pretty solid. It's powered by a quad-core Intel Atom Z3950 processor, with 4GB of RAM. It felt super-shine in performance, though I didn't get a run a risk to run whatsoever benchmarks or bust out whatsoever intensive games in the demo.

The 5.5-inch display features 1080p resolution, which makes for 403 pixels per inch. It looks bright and crispy in person, and offers more than enough particular to make any pictures you capture polish. Yous also get 64GB of internal storage, a microSD card slot, and a three,000mAh battery. The telephone runs Android v.0, with the Asus ZenUI skin on pinnacle.

In general, the Zoom feels less gimmicky than the Pansonic Lumix DMC-CM1, which is more similar a very good photographic camera that besides happens to exist a smartphone. The Zoom feels similar a smartphone first, with some cool camera features for proficient measure.

For $399 unlocked, the Asus ZenFone Zoom could be a solid option for mobile photographers when it comes out in February. Check back soon for a full review of the phone'south functioning, as well as a detailed look at its imaging prowess.
